History
During the Fall of 2008, Jason Robinson, then a sixth grade language arts teacher at George Washington Middle School, had a dream starting a local preliminary to send the first Miss Alexandria to compete for the title of Miss Virginia. Shortly after New Year's Day in 2009, Jason received word of his approval as a local director by the Miss Virginia Board of Directors. Now, the work would begin. Jason's vision and whirlwind efforts to launch the Miss Alexandria program are documented in this Alexandria Times article from Thursday, February 5, 2009:

His plea for sponsorship led to an outpouring of support from Alexandria businesses. The Miss Alexandria Organization continues to be grateful to the following 2009 Founding Sponsors whose support and generosity helped Jason launch a new tradition for the City of Alexandria - Miss Alexandria:

The latest possible date upon which a local preliminary to Miss Virginia 2009 could be held was March 7, 2009. And, on that date, Erika Elaine Thomas, a public relations professional and graduate of James Madison University, emerged triumphant as Miss Alexandria 2009. Alongside Erika, the other trailblazing Alexandria titleholders were Shelby McIntosh, Miss Alexandria's Outstanding Teen 2009, and Mei-Ling Reynolds, Miss Alexandria's Outstanding Pre-Teen 2009. (Pictured above from left to right are: Mei-Ling, Shelby and Erika.)
After the Alexandria team's initial journey to Roanoke for the Miss Virginia, Miss Virginia's Outstanding Teen and Miss Virginia's Outstanding competitions; Jason landed a teaching position in New York City. Kevin Mohorn, formerly director of the Miss Prince George's County preliminary to Miss Maryland, took over as
Executive Director of Miss Alexandria and with Miss Alexandria 2010 crowned alongside Miss Arlington and Miss Hanover on December 5, 2009, and Miss Alexandria 2011 crowned on January 29, 2011, this tradition continues.
